The Importance of Landing Pages

When someone follows a link to your site, where they end up makes a difference as to whether they will stay or leave

If you've done your research, you'll know that you need links on other sites that lead to yours. Now it's time to start thinking about landing pages, which are the individual pages that visitors end up on when following those links. The act of following a link means that visitors are looking for additional information - so winding up on your home page, where they will have to figure out where they are and where they need to go, may cause confusion and frustration.

Here is a real-world example. Say you're a chiropractor that has a website. You manage to get a link onto a website with information about workplace safety, because they want to have more information available on their site about potential health issues that arise from not being careful. In this case, once a visitor leaves the workplace safety site to another site expecting to see information about chiropractic issues, they're not going to want to wind up on the home page. One great option is to place them on a page with an article containing information about chiropractic ailments and how to prevent them. That would be an effective landing page, and a better place for those visitors to end up. (Just be sure to invite visitors to leave that page and explore your site further once they reach the end of the article.)
